Emma & Johnny in the 21st Century is a former half-hour Wiki Channel comedy that was ordered for a pilot on December 22nd, 2014. The show was originally pitched as "Welcome to the Future" before its name changing to "Em and Johnny in the 21st Century" when the names of the main characters, Em and Johnny, were officially announced. When it was officially ordered as a pilot, the name was changed again to "Emma & Johnny in the 21st Century" when it was decided that Emma would no longer go by "Em". It was officially announced via press release on April 16th, 2015.
The series focuses around two kids from the Revolutionary War, Emma Fulley and Johnathan Freeman, who are taken to the 21st century by Neal Continuum, a 21st century time traveler. It premiered on May 4th, 2015 and ended after two seasons on May 2nd, 2016.
Johnathan Freeman and Emma Fulley live in Virginia in the 1700s. They witness the beginning of the battle at Fort Henry and run for cover, where they accidentally step into Neal Continuum's time machine and are taken to the 21st century. By the time Neal realizes what he's done, it's too late to take them back, as it could tear apart the entire space-time continuum. He plans to leave them behind, but they convince him to stay in the 21st century as their "parent" until they're ready to be on their own. They become close friends with Alexis "Alex" Elliot and Sherman Mann, as well as forming fierce rivalries and other relationships and finally begin to feel comfortable in their new home.
When asked about the series, Laura Minx, who plays the titular role of Emma, stated: "I wanted to do something besides music, and I thought Emma & Johnny in the 21st Century would be perfect. It's different than what is already on Wiki Channel, so I thought it would be fun to try out something different". Noah Carson, who portrays Johnny, stated: "Being the total history geek that I am.... this role was basically calling for me, you know."
In the second season of the series, Emma and Johnny become time travelers themselves, and with Neal and his niece Nina travel through different time periods, searching for the rest of Neal's family, but are also still not quite used to the 21st century. Their relationships with Alex and Sherman grow - especially with Emma's newfound feelings for the latter - and their other friends (such as Kimberly, Brock, and Maria) do as well. Emma begins to find herself and is standing up for what she believes in, while Johnny begins to mature into a normal 21st century teenager, including learning to drive. Producer DatNuttyKid says, "This is definitely a season you won't want to miss."
